UK accounting software — MTD, CIS, Open Banking, payroll sync
Run VAT, bank reconciliation and year-end reporting for a UK business, with bank feeds and payroll sync coming soon. Built for construction too — CIS deductions tracked at 0, 20 or 30% and subcontractor payment and deduction statements generated. French and German compliance are planned for 2028, in the same subscription.
Compliance built for Great Britain
Marchant is designed around HMRC rules, UK banking habits and how accountants actually review books.
HMRC Making Tax Digital (MTD)
Keep digital records and prepare VAT returns in MTD-compatible software. Stay on the right side of MTD for VAT without spreadsheets or manual bridging — submission to HMRC is pending production approval.
Bank reconciliation — Open Banking coming soon
Import a CSV statement from any UK bank and match invoices, expenses and payments in one ledger your accountant can trust. Open Banking feeds that import transactions daily are coming soon.
Self Assessment readiness
Sole traders and directors get clean income and expense trails, mileage logs and categorised transactions — ready to hand off at year end alongside VAT and payroll data.
Corporation Tax preparation
Live P&L, balance sheet and journals give you structured numbers for CT600 seasons — fewer surprises when your accountant opens the year-end pack.
PAYE payroll via BrightPay
Coming soon: payroll data synced from BrightPay, so PAYE, National Insurance and pension calculations sit alongside your books. RTI submissions stay with BrightPay.
CIS — Construction Industry Scheme
Self-employed construction workers can log CIS payment statements from contractors, track tax deducted at source (0%, 20% or 30%), and keep the income and expense records their quarterly updates will need. Sending MTD ITSA updates to HMRC from Marchant is coming soon.
How Marchant compares in the UK
FreeAgent and QuickBooks are strong domestic choices. Marchant matches UK essentials today, and France and Germany are planned for 2028 in the same product.
FreeAgent
Excellent for contractors and NatWest bundles. If you later bill in euros, file French TVA or pay staff in Germany, you typically add more tools. Marchant is UK-only today too; France and Germany are planned for 2028.
Marchant vs FreeAgentQuickBooks
Deep UK integrations and market share. Multi-entity across countries usually means separate subscriptions or workarounds. Marchant is a single UK subscription today, with France and Germany planned for 2028.
Marchant vs QuickBooksWhy teams pick Marchant for the UK
Subsidiaries, remote hiring and cross-border suppliers are normal now. Marchant keeps a UK headquarters MTD-clean in one chart of accounts; French TVA and German ELSTER filings join it with the 2028 launches, and stay with your local tools until then.
Common questions about UK accounting
- Is Marchant approved for Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT?
- Marchant keeps the digital records HMRC requires and prepares your quarterly VAT return inside the app — no bridging software, no spreadsheets. Direct submission over the MTD API is supported, with rollout pending HMRC production approval. Marchant is not yet on HMRC's recognised-software list.
- Does Marchant support the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)?
- Yes. Subcontractors can log CIS payment statements from contractors, track tax deducted at source (0%, 20% or 30%), and prepare quarterly income and expense updates for HMRC. MTD ITSA in Marchant is coming soon. CIS deductions are auto-filled from bank transactions.
- Can UK sole traders use Marchant for Self Assessment?
- Yes. Marchant tracks income, expenses and mileage throughout the year so your accountant gets a clean year-end pack with P&L, transaction history and categorised expenses — reducing the work needed to prepare a Self Assessment return.
- Which UK banks does Marchant connect to via Open Banking?
- Bank feeds are not yet live: TrueLayer production access is pending. Once they are (coming soon), Marchant will use FCA-regulated Open Banking to reach all major UK current accounts, including Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Santander, Monzo, Starling and Revolut. Until then, import a CSV statement from any of them and Marchant suggests matches to your invoices and expenses.
